I haven't tried Mint yet, but I would definitely recommend SUSE for a stable, user friendly distribution that almost always "just works". Unfortunately Linux users are a bit tribal so it's difficult to get an honest comparison of different distributions. For someone who is fairly new to Linux, going with a very popular distro like SUSE (or Ubuntu) is sensible since there is far greater forum support available and usually better software stability. If you like the KDE4 look, then SUSE is generally regarded as giving one of the best KDE experiences, and the current 11.4 edition is solid enough for both home and professional use. On the down side, if you love the command line, you may get frustrated that SUSE is more set up with GUI users in mind.
